PeoplePC is a hideous ISP. They intentionally force users to install and use the "Smart Dialer" so that ads may be served on the user's machines. A user may not set up a standard dial-up connection. The developers at PeoplePC went out of their way to break compatibility with standard Windows dial-up networking, impacting a number of user scenarios (sharing an internet connection, autodialing for nighttime updates, etc). The dialer is intrusive and annoying, pestering the user when the user is "disconnected"--even while using a laptop on an existing wireless connection. Recently, I've discovered that if are using an alternate connection (wireless at an internet cafe), it is impossible to send mail through PeoplePC's servers...this is a supported feature with every other ISP I've used, and I assume PeoplePC intentionally broke that user scenario so that one must use the crappy dialer software.
On top of _all_ that, the technical support is a 900 number. Experience with PeoplePC: hateful, painful, indignant, asphyxiating. |
